Kelly's story

Kelly

When Kelly’s son was diagnosed with Global Development Delay in 2021, her world felt overwhelming. He was in a mainstream school and being regularly excluded, and showing distressed behaviours, Kelly described him as “like a deer in headlights.” Kelly didn’t know where to turn, she simply needed someone who understood, someone she could talk to there and then, without waiting for appointments.

That moment came when she called the ADD-vance Helpline. From the very first conversation, Kelly felt heard and supported.

ADD-vance was my biggest support then and still is.  They are a lifeline.

Kelly went on to join ADD-vance workshops, support groups, and coaching sessions. She completed the 6‑week Autism and ADHD course and received weekly phone calls that helped her take each next step. Whether it was navigating school exclusions, understanding new diagnoses, or challenging decisions around services like PALMS, ADD‑vance was the first place she turned.

The impact extended to her whole family. Her in‑laws attended workshops so they could better understand and support her son. For Kelly, who experienced her own mental health challenges during this period, that community and understanding meant everything.

Today, Kelly’s son is thriving in specialist provision school. The transition wasn’t easy, transport issues, school avoidance and big changes, but with a supportive environment, sensory spaces, and the right approach, he has grown in confidence. He has moved from a behavioural class to a small group of ten boys, started swimming, and found joy in new experiences. Kelly finishes by saying, “he is building his confidence every day, finding his place and discovering what he can achieve, I am so proud of him.”

Together, we can make sure no family in Hertfordshire is left without support
